출생 시 저체중이 뇌졸중 발생률과 사망률을 증가시킨다는 연구결과가 있다.1 이는 임신 중 산모의 영양 상태가 자녀의 성인시기 뇌졸중 발생률 및 사망률에 영향을 미칠 가능성을 시사하며, 한 국가 안에서도 지역적으로 뇌졸중 발생률과 사망률에 차이를 보이는 현상을 일부 설명할 수 있을 것이다.
근거
잉글랜드와웨일즈 지역의 성인 뇌졸중 사망률은 출생시 저체중이었던군에서높았으며,1 스코틀랜드 지역의 코호트 연구에서는 출생 시 체중이 1kg 증가할 때 성인 시기의 연령보정 뇌졸중 위험비가 HR=0.38(95% CI, 0.24-0.60)로 유의하게 감소하였고,2 남 캘리포니아의 50세 이하 Medicaid 수혜자를 대상으로 실시한 연구에서도 출생 시 체중이 2,500g 미만인 군이 4,000g 이상인 군에 비하여 뇌졸중 발생률이 2배높았다.3
