The Korean Stroke Society has been dedicated to organizing diverse programs to enhance public awareness of stroke.

1. Educational Lecture Program

The Korean Stroke Society has conducted nationwide public education campaign programs every year since 1999. During this campaign, we held press conferences and provided lectures about stroke prevention, awareness of stroke warning symptoms, and the importance of acute stroke management. The number of participating centers and audiences increased consistently (as shown in Figure).

In particular, on World Stroke Day 2010, we conducted a campaign under the theme of “1 in 6” simultaneously with the World Stroke Organization (WSO) activities. In 60 centers nationwide, a total of 6,619 people participated in lectures that discussed stroke risk factors, warning symptoms, and prevention and acute treatment of stroke. We also released a Korean version of “1 in 6” pamphlet of which the original version was designed by the WSO.

2. Public Media Advertisement

Cooperating with the Korean Center for Disease Control and 6 other related academic societies, the Korean Stroke Society has participated in developing and releasing public media advertisements to enhance the public’s awareness for the importance of controlling risk factors for cardiovascular disease to prevent stroke and heart disease since 2006 (http://stroke.or.kr/pds/vod2.html). In 2010, under the name of the Korean Stroke Society and the Korean Center for Disease Control, the public media advertisement for stroke prevention was distributed to the general public more than 68,000 times through broadcastings of terrestrial TV (10 times), local TV (81 times), cable TV (56 times), electronic billboard on main streets (2,700 times), and on electronic billboard in subways (65,700 times).

3. Other activities

In 2010, sponsored by the Boehringer Ingelheim Korea and the LG Twins, one of Korea’s most popular professional baseball teams, the Korean Stroke Society conducted the ‘Strike Out Stroke Campaign’. During the campaign, advertisements emphasizing stroke symptoms of facial paralysis, hemiparesis, and speech disturbance and immediate action seeking for urgent treatments was advertised two times in each of LG Twins’ home games.
